Gulf Oil Spill and the 2010 Hurricane Season

The hurricane season for 2010 starts June 3rd and forecasters are predicting 5 storms with hurricane force winds along the East and Gulf coasts of the United States.
It’s only going to take one storm in the Gulf, it doesn’t have to be a hurricane to further hamper clean-up efforts. Some think a major storm would break up the oil spill making it much harder to clean-up. Some believe that a storm surge would help disperse the oil off shore and break down the oil slick. Even others say the oil slick would keep a storm from getting stronger. There has little research been done on oil slicks, so the best guess is all I see these as.
This oil slick in the Gulf could end up on all the coast lines a long the Gulf and even Cuba.
Under the sea tar balls are forming, some of them have been found off the Florida Keys today. Experts are having trouble modeling how the oil will react in water since BP has not disclosed what kind of crude is spilling. Lighter oil evaporates quicker and is easier to disperse with chemicals. Heavier oil is more dangerous to marine and bird life, and also sinks faster so heavier oil is easier to contain.
One thing is for sure with the hurricane season upon us, the BP oil spill now means high-stakes. One can only hope that the oil spill can be contained or so many people, birds and marine lives will be affected. Economies of this Gulf area will be changed and tourism money lost.
